Throughout the year, we recognize some of our wonderful volunteers in our monthly Volunteer Spotlight. Everyone at Crisis Nursery would like to say thank you to Karen Pickard, our Volunteer of the Month for September! She has been volunteering at the Nursery for the past five years, starting in fall of 2010. Nursery staff nominated Karen for her positive attitude and caring spirit.

When Karen was nominated as Volunteer of the Month, we asked her a few questions so we could get to know her a little better. Introducing...

Karen!

Why did you decide to volunteer at Crisis Nursery?
During my teaching career, I planned a 7th grade field trip to the Nursery each year.  I wanted my students to learn about this great place and the work done in and for our community.  When I retired, I knew I had a great opportunity to share in the work, so I signed up.

What is the best vacation you have ever been on?
Celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary in Greece was amazing, but going to the same cottage in Michigan on the shores of Lake Michigan with our growing family year after year is the best!

Do you have any pets?
NO

What is one food you cannot live without?
While all the pretend, plastic food that my Nursery buddies serve me in the play kitchen corner is ‘delicious,’ I adore real chocolate!

What is your favorite TV show?
“Downton Abbey and “60 Minutes” are the only TV shows I actually plan to watch.

Thanks again to Karen and to all of our amazing volunteers!

Every week, over 150 volunteers help out around Crisis Nursery. Volunteers assist in numerous ways, from caring for the children at the Nursery alongside staff, to tending the beautiful flowers in our gardens, or even helping out as a board member spreading the Nursery's mission through the community. All that happens at Crisis Nursery every day of the year is possible only with the help of our many outstanding volunteers who selflessly give their time to help the Nursery fulfill its mission of preventing child abuse and neglect in Champaign County. In fiscal year 2015, volunteers provided the Nursery with over 16,000 hours of service. Thank you, volunteers!
