Why do I volunteer at Crisis Nursery? Though I am no longer young, I am still a dreamer. I care about people. I want to make a difference. And although I can not change the whole world, through the time spent here I can make a positive difference in the small world of a child.
I can give a mother peace of mind, knowing her child is being lovingly cared for so that she can focus on getting her family back on track. I can help a child feel safe and comfortable during a scary time. I can bring a smile to a toddler who is missing his family and make him forget his sadness for awhile. I can provide mom or dad with the rest they need to more effectively parent. I can model kindness, patience, and compassion.
By volunteering here I am helping improve the future for children who will grow to become adult members of our community. It is not entirely unselfish; I get such fulfillment out of the hours spent here! The sigh of a baby relaxing their little head on my shoulder, the giggles of children as we play together, the tiny pats on my own back in return as I pat a child to comfort him, the smiles and hugs and laughter here all minister to me in ways difficult to express. The staff and volunteers are among the finest people I have ever met, caring, constant, committed to the children and families they serve. Crisis Nursery is a place of hope, the beginning of a better life for the people who come through its doors. It is an honor to be part of that.
