Champaign County Board of Health and 708 Mental Health Board
The Perinatal Depression Program has been funded for a second year at Crisis Nursery through a grant from the County Board of Health and the 708 Mental Health Board. This joint initiative was established to integrate physical and mental health services for a vulnerable population. Studies show postpartum depression continues beyond the “baby blues” affecting 10-20% of mothers. Perinatal depression can impair critical early bonding and relationships between Mom and baby. This can negatively impact the child’s healthy early development and school readiness.
The program will provide services to mothers with children aged less than one year who are identified as “at risk” for perinatal depression. Mothers who reside in all of Champaign County are eligible for these services. Home visitor services, parent-child interaction groups, linkage with health services, postpartum support groups, crisis care and respite care are some of the core prevention services being offered in assistance.
This grant makes it possible for Crisis Nursery to expand and tailor our support services as we reach out to these mothers and babies and their families. Additionally, the Nursery will educate the community and health care providers regarding the impact of perinatal depression on babies and families and the importance of identifying Moms who need help.
Crisis Nursery receives 36% of our Annual Operating Budget from various government sources. Many thanks to the Board members of both the Champaign County Board of Health and the Champaign County 708 Board and the members of the city councils who voted for Crisis Nursery in these funding processes.
