Crisis Nursery is a happy place. I am constantly amazed at the kids that come through our doors and their ability to cope with a family crisis. There have been many days that I have laughed out loud by a child’s funny statement or wild dress up costume. A few weeks ago I laughed out loud at both. I walked into the kitchen to get a glass of water and there was a little boy who was dressed up in our dragon costume. If you have never seen this amazing dragon costume, you are missing out. It is complete with a dragon head hood and tail and never fails to make me smile. This particular little boy was trying his hardest to peel a banana, to no avail. The wonderful volunteer who was sitting next to him asked him if he would like help with it. The little boy answered so confidently, “No thanks, dragons peel their own bananas”.
Now, whenever I am doing a challenging task and feel like giving up and throwing in the towel, I am reminded of this little boy and inevitably I find myself whispering to myself (much to the confusion of my coworkers) “No Erika, dragons peel their own bananas”. These brave little people who come through the doors of Crisis Nursery inspire me every day.
